The Delaware Water Gap National recreation area is on the border between New Jersey and Pennsylvania about an hour and a half from the city. We've been meaning to get there for a couple of years and this weekend we finally made it. If you're thinking about going, there are a couple of maps showing the area and some of the hiking trails, and driving directions at the bottom of this page.

The spring flowers are all way ahead of schedule this year because of the mild winter.

We hiked about a seven mile loop that was equal parts uphill on the Copper Mine trail, along the ridge on the Appalachian trail, and back down to the Delaware River on the Kaiser trail.

There were several different local environments as we climbed out of the Dleaware River valley. By the time we hit the Appalachian trail it was open and sunny.

Hiking with Katie isn't quite what it used to be. She is still willing, but not always able. I had to carry her over some of the rougher terrain, much to Sue's ammusement.

It's a sad commentary on the state of the restaurant business in the Bronx, but the grin on my face is because we found a Ponderosa Steak house with a salad bar on our way home. Neither of us eats steak, but a good all-you-can-eat salad bar was like an oasis in the Italian Chinese desert.

To get to the Delaware Water Gap from our neighborhood, get on Pelham Pkwy West, after crossing White Plains road, take the ramp for the Bronx River Parkway South then follow the signs to get across the George Washington Bridge. On the other side of the river follow the signs for I80 West. Once you are on I80 It's about 70 miles to the visitors center. The total distance from AECOM is 82 miles.
